Olowalu Plantation House Wedding Venue
The first time I shot a wedding at the Olowalu Plantation House wedding venue in Maui, I was like—okay, THIS is the dream. You’ve got ocean views, palm trees swaying like they’re straight out of a travel ad, and an incredible golden hour view. You step onto the property and instantly feel the mix of old-school Hawaiian charm and laid-back island energy.
Out of all the Maui venues I’ve photographed, this one has a little extra something. It may be the way the sun sets right over the water during the ceremony or the quiet vibe that makes the whole day feel intimate, even if 100 of your favorite people are surrounding you. Either way, Olowalu has a way of slowing time down—and from a photographer’s point of view, that’s where the magic happens.

The vibe of THE olowalu plantation house WEDDING VENUE
Let’s talk about what makes Olowalu Plantation House so special beyond just the views (which, yes, are next-level). This place has a history—roots in Maui’s sugar plantation era. The house itself is a restored plantation-style home with large wraparound lanais, wooden shutters, and floorboards that creak every so often, reminding you that it has stories to tell. However, it’s charming, classic, and well-maintained, offering a unique blend of vintage character and modern island vibes.
Location-wise, it’s hard to beat. You’re right on the West Maui coast, with sweeping views of the ocean on one side and palm trees and greenery everywhere else. The lawn is huge (perfect for ceremonies, receptions, or just running barefoot). Between the breeze, palms, and that warm Maui sun, you instantly feel like you’re on island time.

the maui wedding ceremony experience
When it comes to the ceremony setup at Olowalu Plantation House, you don’t need to overthink it—nature already did the heavy lifting. Most couples choose the expansive lawn tucked under the shade of the massive trees that frame the ocean perfectly. It’s simple and stunning, and it works with just about any style—whether you’re into tropical florals or prefer a super minimalist look.
The layout is flexible, making it easy to customize without worrying about logistics. You’ve got the ocean as your backdrop (no arch necessary unless you want one), and the vibe is sleek and effortless. Guests naturally settle in, regardless of how formal or casual the day feels.
The ambiance is unreal. You’ll hear waves, birds singing, and the soft rustling of palm leaves in the breeze. If you’re lucky enough to time your ceremony close to sunset, golden hour here is absolutely magical. The light filters through the trees and hits just right, giving everything a soft, glowy look.

accessibility & coordination tips
Planning a wedding from thousands of miles away can feel like a lot—but Olowalu makes it easier. While they no longer offer their own planning team, the good news is that most (if not all) planners and coordinators on Maui know this venue like the back of their hand. It’s a popular spot, and local vendors are super familiar with the layout, flow, and what works best here—which takes a ton of pressure off you.
As for logistics, it’s in a pretty ideal spot—about 10–15 minutes from Lahaina, with numerous hotels, Airbnbs, and resorts nearby for guests. You’re not out in the middle of nowhere, but it still feels tucked away enough to give you privacy. And because it’s on the west side of the island, the sunsets are basically a guarantee.
That sweet spot for intimacy and privacy in a venue is sometimes hard to find, but this place nails it. Whether you’re going all out with a 100-person guest list or keeping it low-key with a smaller crew, the space works either way. You don’t have to do much to “dress it up”—the charm is already there. It doesn’t feel like a cookie-cutter wedding venue, either. It feels like you’re getting married in someone’s home, on land that’s been loved and lived on. It’s relaxed, it’s beautiful, and most importantly—it feels like Maui. It’s not touristy or cheesy. It’s just authentic island charm that sticks with you long after the day is over.
